What science says about practicing

The evidence behind practice-driven learning.

Our approach isn't a hunch. Decades of cognitive-science research point to the same conclusion: testing yourself and spacing your study beat passive review. Here are the primary sources — read them yourself.

Testing yourself beats re-reading

Students who took practice tests on a passage remembered substantially more on a delayed exam than students who simply re-studied the same material — even though re-studying looked better on an immediate test. Retrieving knowledge is the learning event.

A meta-analysis of 188 experiments agrees

Across 272 effects from 188 experiments, practice testing outperformed re-studying (weighted effect size +0.51) and dramatically outperformed doing nothing (+0.93). The benefit held across ages, subjects, and question formats.

The experts' verdict: practice testing is a top-tier strategy

A landmark review compared ten popular study techniques. Highlighting, summarizing, and re-reading scored low. Practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice were the two rated high utility — effective across learners, materials, and settings.

Spacing your practice makes it last

A quantitative synthesis of 317 experiments found that spreading study sessions out over time — rather than cramming — reliably improves long-term retention. The longer you need to remember, the more spacing helps.
