The testing effect, explained

One of the most reliable findings in learning science: the act of retrieving what you know is what makes it stick. Here's why — and how to use it.

Ask most students how they study and they'll describe some version of input: reading the chapter, watching the lecture again, re-copying their notes. It feels like the natural way to get information into your head. But a large body of research shows that the most powerful study move is the opposite — output. Pulling information back out of memory does more to cement it than putting it in again. Psychologists call this the testing effect, or retrieval practice.

What the testing effect is

The testing effect is the finding that taking a test on material — even a low-stakes self-quiz with no grade — improves later retention more than spending the same time re-studying. A test isn't just a measurement of what you know; the act of testing itself changes memory for the better.

The landmark experiment

In a now-classic 2006 study, Roediger and Karpicke had students study prose passages, then either re-study the passage or take a recall test on it. On a test given just five minutes later, the re-studiers looked better. But on delayed tests — two days and a week later — the students who had practiced retrieval remembered substantially more. The pattern is striking: the method that felt less effective in the moment produced far better long-term learning.

The key insight

Re-reading boosts short-term familiarity. Retrieval boosts long-term memory. Exams test the long term.

It's not a one-study fluke

The effect is one of the best-replicated results in cognitive psychology. A 2017 meta-analysis pooling 272 effects from 188 experiments found practice testing outperformed re-studying by a moderate margin (a weighted effect size of about +0.51) and outperformed doing nothing by a large one (about +0.93). And when researchers ranked ten popular study techniques by usefulness, practice testing landed in the top tier — "high utility" across ages, subjects, and formats.

Why it works

Every time you successfully retrieve a fact, you're not just proving you know it — you're strengthening the memory and the cues that lead back to it, making the next retrieval easier. Struggling a little to recall (a "desirable difficulty") is part of what makes the memory durable. Re-reading skips that struggle entirely, which is exactly why it produces a comforting but shallow sense of knowing.

What is the testing effect?

The testing effect (also called test-enhanced learning or retrieval practice) is the finding that retrieving information from memory — for example by taking a practice test — improves long-term retention more than simply re-reading or re-studying the same material.

Why does self-quizzing work better than re-reading?

Each time you successfully pull information out of memory, you strengthen and reorganize that memory, making it easier to retrieve later. Re-reading only creates a feeling of familiarity, which does not reliably translate into recall under exam conditions.

Do I need feedback when I quiz myself?

Retrieval practice helps even without feedback, but adding feedback — checking the correct answer and understanding why — makes it more effective, especially for questions you got wrong.
